PROCEDURES
Endourology is the use of minimally invasive or small incisional techniques to treat a variety of both malignant and benign diseases of the urinary tract. As opposed to laparoscopic and robotic techniques described elsewhere on this website, endoscopic techniques involve procedures for the most part through existing channels of the urinary tract. These procedures are almost always performed under anesthesia and examples of them are as listed below.
- Ureteroscopy
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy
- Transurethral resection of bladder tumors
- Transurethral resection of benign prostate tissue
PROCEDURES
Laparoscopic urologic surgery is a minimally-invasive surgical technique in which certain operations on the urinary tract that have traditionally been performed within the abdomen and pelvic cavities are instead done through small incisions (usually less than one-half inch).
Compared with traditional surgeries using larger incisions, there are advantages to the patient using this technique. Placing instruments and imaging equipment through these small openings allows the surgeon to perform many surgeries with reduced blood loss, shorter recovery time, and decreased pain.
It is now commonplace for many urologic procedures that formerly required open surgical techniques to be performed using laparoscopy. Some of these are as listed below:
- Laparoscopic nephrectomy for benign conditions
- Laparoscopic nephrectomy for kidney cancer
- Laparoscopic pyeloplasty
- Laparoscopic kidney cyst removal
